  Cold? Oh, yes. Steep? Yes, certainly. But is a hike up Blood Mountain in North Georgia with good people worth it in the end? Absolutely.

  The Dark Hollow Trail and the Ghost House Trail seem like two of the best hikes to take on a Halloween at Big Ridge State Park.

  Little tip for the hiker in the Great Smoky Mountains: if you hike anywhere near Cades Cove in the fall, be sure to consider those coming to the park to admire the fall foliage.

  I took a quick drive during a vacation after moving to Knoxville, enjoying the rain in the Great Smoky Mountains.

  Transitioning to a new job in a new city in a new state can be a stressful time, so I headed up to the Andrews Bald Trail in the Smokies to make some new connections.

  The year 2015 was a busy year, filled with transition, so this was the only post I made that year. But the Sourwood Trail is very close to where I grew up, so it was a fitting walk.

  Paris Mountain, in South Carolina outside of Greenville, is home to many great hikes, including the Sulphur Springs Trail, a 3.5-mile loop. A perfect hike for the fall.

  I had hoped to go to Hospital Rock in Jones Gap State Park, but between a long wait and obstacles on the trail, the walk was shorter than intended. But the autumn colors were outstanding, regardless.

• 

  I’ve been to Vogel State Park before, and it’s in one of my most favorite places, the North Georgia mountains. This time, I took the Bear Hair Gap Trail.

• 

  Table Rock is a hike that certainly got my blood pumping but the views along the way and at the top are more than worth the effort.
